Rivets Of Babylon [Feb. 11th, 2008|01:58 pm]
chezghost
To celebrate my impending thirtiesdoom I started a new blog last week.

It's called '30 Years Come Back' and offers 1-2 songs each weekday, starting from 1978 and moving forward a year day by day, returning to '78 and repeating the cycle when the present has been caught up with. Sometimes a song may be one year ahead or behind it's original year of release, just to annoy you. But I hope you like it and some if not all of the track selections.

30YCB

It's going well so far to the extent that I'm considering additional blogs - one for pre-78 songs I like and one for current stuff only, but these would both need far more work and time so it's more likely I'll tie this into a base58 re-jig that could include a mini blog perhaps. Keep 'em peeled.

Ultramix 94 [May. 30th, 2007|11:29 am]
chezghost
FINALLY finished this. You can listen to all 17(!) parts online here

Or download them at high-quality here

Really must make torrents for all of these sometime. I was thinking "ah no-one really cares about this so why bother" but then two friends told me on Saturday that they still listen to the 05 mix and a third person expressed interest. People tend to appreciate the more recent ones rather than revisit the 90s tho it seems.

In case you missed out I put another video sequence together this time to go with an audio sequence from the 2004 mix featuring Girls Aloud, Chromeo and Dizzee Rascal. Good fun tho it's only really worthwhile for when 'Stand Up Tall' comes in.

In the pipeline: more of all this plus Promozone 0706 (new pop videos for June) in a couple of weeks.

My first video mash-up... [Apr. 22nd, 2007|09:28 pm]
chezghost
I finally started using Adobe Premiere to mess around with video editing again which I haven't done for many years now. Luckily it wasn't too difficult re-acquainting myself with it. The motive was to create a video sequence to go with a section of one of the parts of the recent Ultramix '94, namely the Biosphere/Madonna/Autechre sequence at the end of Part 9. So here it is dubbed over the original promo clip for Madonna's Bedtime Story' (a fantastic video by Mark Romanek - probably the most sophisticated references and imagery you'll ever see in a Madge vid) taken from The Ultimate Collection DVD:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI95zyuBqcE

Great fun to put together because of the 'control' element, lots of faffing around cutting up the original vid and speeding it up/slowing it down to fit the vocals. Hope to do a few more of these to go with Ultramix sections already made and those to come.

Meme questions... [Mar. 12th, 2007|11:35 am]
chezghost
...from freakytrigger

1. Are you proud of your role in the birth of the bootleg boom?

Yes but if only I had done as much DJing as I had done interviews for American press. It's for the best tho as I think back to the sort of thing I was doing then and wince a bit (as I will when I look back on now in five years probably!). It was 'too much too soon' in many respect tho - being invited to music conferences in other countries and not being able to go or just being too scared to go was rubbish. The best things were being involved (read 'muscling in on') in a blog that became a focal point for things in a very short space of time, getting namechecked on Radio 1 and XFM and eventually appearing on the latter and getting a mix I made played out - that might be the only time ever 'Euphoria (Nino's Dream)' got played on a mainstream radio station so good for that if nothing else. Meeting a lot of interesting new people was also great. But there were so many missed opportunities at the same time...

2. Whose CD sleeve would you most like to design?

If Rachel Stevens gets to do another album then her. Anyone like that really. It might not be very challenging tho (apart from the challenge of trying to help make a boring pop star LOOK interesting as well as sound interesting), and would probably revolve more around the photographer's ideas. But I wouldn't be too fussy here because further opportunities to do such a thing may not come easy yet when they do they pay quite nicely.

3. What is the worst design faux pas a client can make?

Not knowing what they want but knowing what they don't want perhaps, reasonable as it may seem to them. Having some idea of the designer's own processes really helps. And if they take forever to pay you that's always disappointing of course. I've not had any real nightmares in these respects though.

4. What is your happiest childhood memory?

Going on a day trip to London with my Mum one time maybe. It's hard to think of anything specific. Some seaside trips would also figure highly as I do love the beach (and trips/journeys in general, clearly) despite never dressing for it.

5. If you were a mythological creature, which would you like to be?

A griffin perhaps. None of this centaur rubbish.
